  1. Hey Rossman, the 7th picture got my attention. Its certainly got the mystery aspect captured well, it almost seems like your underground in sometype of maze of some sort. I cant help but wondering where you might be its got me thinking. The construction of the photo is cool, I like the way you framed the photo in an untraditional approach. The shadows cast cool colors on the photo and adds a lot of depth. Well done.

  2. Hi Rossman!

I am definitely going to have to agree with Ryan. Number 7 is by FAR your strongest composition. The amount of abstract is excellent. The way you framed the photo, directly in the center looking straight up, makes it seem like it could go on forever, a maze. I don't know it seems like some sort of network of ramps or stairs. The shadows created on each level really adds great separation. It's an excellent photograph. Well, done.

  3. Rossman- Number 7 is awesome! Great job framing, were you on the bottom of the staircase or did you reach in with your camera? As the viewer my attention goes directly to the end or top, however you chose to view it, and then spirals back toward the edges. For such a blank photo, there is so much going on!! Nice work!

  4. Hi Rossman! I would agree with the other comments and say that number 7 is amazing! Between the composition, as well as the subject matter, you really grasped that mystery complex in the frame! The photo as a whole definitely makes me wonder what the subject within the photo is, where it is, and what is going on.

  5. Rossman, I am going to agree with everyone else that my favorite is #7. It makes me curious as to what it is – while I imagine that it is the space in between stairs that runs down to ground floor, I am not completely certain if that is the case. It also looks like a pathway I could walk down that might move simultaneously.

The perspective is very fascinating – it looks as though this space-way never ends. And the way the light flows in creating contrast on different areas moves my eyes along a visual path. At the same time I feel trapped, which is not necessarily a bad thing here. It is sensational.

All in all, good work on your photos. If you are interested my second choice would have been #6. If this is you playing piano I definitely would classify it as a self-portrait. The tone is great, it helps with the comforting feel of the photo. The piano player seems unaware of his audience and thus very at ease.

  6. Looks like I'm going to agree with everyone. Number 7 is great. I love the way you framed it giving it almost a different dimension. It reminds me of the rabbit hole from Alice in Wonderland, like a spiral into another world. Great job.

  7. Rossman,

My favorite is also #7. I'm really wondering what that is and how you got this picture. It reminds me of something ancient but still takes you to another world. Great framing/composition. Excellent job!

  8. Hi Rossman,

My favorite photo is #8, but #7 was a close second. I liked #8 because it just struck me as kind of odd. I think am looking at lenses. The way that they are places is interesting and how the shot is composed I like as well. #7 I feel is sort of a mind trip, but I like that, too. I want to know where it is that you took that picture.

Your other pictures are a little plain. They are just places and objects that show no mystery whatsoever. Maybe try getting closer to the subject. For instance, in photo #10, if you got closer to some part of the vehicle then maybe the viewer wouldn't be able to tell that it was a vehicle right away. They would have to think about it.

    Other than that, great job!

  9. My favorite photo of yours is #7. I would assume it’s a stairwell after looking at it a little longer, but at first glance I really had no idea. It makes me a little dizzy and shows movement, but I think the vanishing point is what makes it most interesting. One critique I would have is the tone of color in #9. I think that it’s a little too processed-looking and the subject could be a little more mysterious.

  10. Hey Rossman~
Like many other who commented, I enjoy photo #7. It really captures the mystery aspect assigned for this crit. The framing is cool because the two closest walls to the lens really line up your eye until you continue further into the picture where you are then feeling lost, which I love. I am not sure at all where you are but it works because we are all left in question.

  11. Rossman -

I really enjoyed photo number 7. I love the movement in the image and it makes me wonder what I am looking at and where it is going. The lighting in the picture is also really nice.

  12. My favorite photo is # 7. The line work and contrasting from light to dark within the pattern is great. Very modern and sleek. Photo #2 makes great use of angles and light. Going forward, as our professor has said, try to move away from centering your content- I think that adds more mystery to it. Good photos overall!

  13. Hi Rossman,

I really enjoyed looking at your photos. It is almost like looking through an antique photo album. You've created a world where (ironically) smartphones do not exist and really brought it back. Like most who have commented before, I enjoy photo 7. But I like 6 as well. It carries personal weight for me, music is something that was put on a pedestal in my home and that photo reminds me of that.

I do wish you took more photos of events than just objects but overall you did a great job.

  14. Rossman-
Number seven is very strong and is my favorite. I like how it is abstract and the way you framed it makes the viewer wonder what they are actually looking at. Number one also shows good texture from the cement and the plant in contrast.
