Hello Emily! After taking a look at your posts the one that stood out to me the most was #14 – one of your self-portraits. I was drawn to the mysteriousness and raw appeal I see in this photograph more than any of your others.
As far as the construction, I visually enjoy how you positioned yourself in the frame – not centered yet with a degree of balance. The sense of balance is illustrated by your positioning as well as the light and dark contrast. For example, how the shade of your lipstick in the top-right is balanced by the darkness of your strap in the bottom-left. Your necklace also adds to the visual movement of the photo, it was a nice touch – without it I might have lost interest more quickly.
The contrast not only assists with balance but it also gives the photograph depth, where it could have ended up looking flat. Looking at the photo I feel as though you are right infront of me. Infront of me I see confidence yet masked insecurity, strength but sensitivity. I relate to this photo because it emits qualities I see in myself. When I look at it I think ‘breathe’. While this being said, I am not sure if this was the motivation behind taking this photograph.
I imagine that maybe the motivation was to take a photo that would capture an aspect your personality while not revealing too much. Hence the exclusion of your eyes and focus on detail surrounding other areas of yourself. I like it!
Emily- Your pictures are awesome! The majority of these photos left me with questions, but good questions. Very mysterious!!! I am still trying to figure out what number 6 is, it looks like the longest shaggy dog ever !! My favorite of your photos is your self portrait (number 1). I love the angle you chose and how you are not looking directly into the camera. You look natural and flawless in this photo. Good work!
Hi Emily! I have to say, I don't have one criticism for your set! They have amazing contrast and composition, and perfectly portray that mystery theme. I think self portraits were hard to do for this project so that they didn't come out as "selfies". I think your self portraits are few that actually go along with the theme. I also specifically like number 13. It's kinda funny with the little action figure things posed in them, but the atmosphere around them make it creepy. Great job on this project!
Hey Emily!! Your photos are very interesting and the mystery with them is very intriguing. I really love number 4, the shadow cast from the design on the glasses really caught my eye and made me really stop to look at it. I feel as though glasses used to be seen as nerdy or just uncool, obviously the day in age we live in now that is no longer the case but you really showed glasses in a unique and beautiful light. I love the way you framed the photo as well cutting he face in half and giving a more close up look. I am excited to see more of your photos. Also your self portrait in number 1 is exquisite.
Emily it was tough to pick a favorite photo because I had a few. However I'm going to go with #1 the self portrait. The contrast on all your photo's is on point as well as the composition. I feel as though you captured the mystery aspect of the assignment brilliantly, well done. The way you framed photo 1 immediately got my attention right away and drew me back to it in the end. Very good work, I really enjoyed your photos!
I like your photo #13 because of the figures and the angle that you took the photo at. It makes it seem like they’re watching the viewer. The darkness at the top of the frame also adds an element of mystery along with the texture of the walls. I also like your self portrait, #14 which I think is my favorite. The contrast works really well with your dark lipstick and the contrast you added makes your jewelry and skin tone stand out.
I really enjoyed looking through your photos, you have a nice wide variety of subjects. Overall, for the theme of this crit, mystery, I enjoy #10. I am really not sure what is in the middle of the floor and I can't stop looking at it! So, good job on the mystery aspect haha.
The form of the photo is nice, even though there is a lot going on in the picture. The long furry guy in the middle creates great leading lines that take you through the room. The b&w contrast works well, I think the symmetry of the windows both being washed out white.
Beautiful photos! I love the lighting and angles you used throughout. I really liked number tne because I couldn't figure out what I was looking at! You did a great job of showing mystery. Picture number one is also a really nice self portrait.
Through these photos I can tell you are someone who pays attention to details. You find the texture of objects and the design in common things. Even the thin white frame you added around the second photo adds to it.
If I had to choose I'd say my favorite was 12. I have no idea what's going on because instead of losing interest I'm looking deeper to try to put together the pieces of the scene.
