  1. Hello David, It was hard for me to decide which to choose among your set of photos. I really enjoy a lot of them. You seem to have an eye for what might make a good photo. Even when I narrowed it down, I felt that it was a toss-up between #1 and #13. While the use of color and foreground/background space is great in #1, I find the creativity and uniqueness of #13 just as successful. I still don’t know which one to vote on so I am going to talk about some about each.
For #1 I am really fond of how the foreground is so clear yet disorganized seeming. It grabs my immediate attention and gets me looking around at other semi-hidden objects. Then my attention shifts to the background which is burry and somewhat confusing. I like how the two figures on the left are hazy but the man on the right is more clear… it looks almost as if he is performing for ghosts. Overall, very mysterious while using color to entice the viewer.
On the other hand, #13 works really well at introducing color in the reflection of the mirror. I find it very creative how you brought something you would normally look up to see at an angle where you are looking down at your feet. The more I look at this photo the more I love it. I feel that your personal intent in this photo is more outward than in #1. I think my final decision goes with #9 because it makes me wonder more about you intent and why you chose to do a self-portrait reflected in something broken. Again, great photos.

  2. David, I love your photos and how you captured color in every single one of them. My favorites are 5,6,10 and 13. For the sake of this critique though, I will say my most favorite is number 5. In Berkowitz's handouts he did say that one of the cliches for photographing was graffiti, however, I believe that you subject matter in number 5 was not intended to be centered around that.

The use of lines and the soft, minimal coloring works magic in an urban setting like this. The lines of the train tracks make for a very busy composition which is often hit or miss with photographs, but I think it works great in this case - It's very grunge. I'm assuming it was an overcast day. The sky being completely blown out adds an ominous feeling to the frame. But, I do wonder what this photograph would look like and if it would elicit a different feeling if there was some blue in the sky.

  3. My favorite photo of yours is #6. I think you have a great perspective here. We were urged to take photos from different heights in one of the lectures and you did that well. It really makes the structures at the top of the frame look like a model or something. You have a lot of nice colors in your photos and it looks like you were lreally ooking for shots that had a variety of colors in some of them. Your self portrait with the mirror is particularly interesting because of the colors you captured in the reflection. The color of the leaves on the trees is a nice gold shade. One critique I have is that 11 and 12 are similar in subject matter, but I like 12 more because there’s more rhythm. I would try to vary some shots a little more that look like they were taken in the same setting. You have a strong style and I think you’ve had interesting subject matter with your two sets so far, nice job.

  4. Wow what a great set man. The shots of the studio and musicians really captivated passion in my opinion. Some of my favorite shots were 7,10,12. But my vote for your POW is number 7.Not only does it have an awesome array of colors, but it also has so much going on for the viewer to ponder. The subjects depicted in the shot are very interesting and their clothing adds to the color of the shot. I"m not sure if you know these people, but if not, good job sneaking this one in!

  5. David,

You definitely have a distinct style in your photographs. My favorite here is also #7, with the two very eccentrically dressed characters going grocery shopping. You captured a great moment in time. Nice job!

  6. #13 has my vote for POW, I often times find it hard coming up with good ideas for the self portrait portion of our photo assignments but I really enjoy yours. It came out really well and I really like the color of the shoes you have it makes the picture pop. Also the broken glass of the mirror added an additional cool aspect, in regards to color and passion I think you did a great job.

  7. #10 was my favorite of this set. The photo has that sense of passion and gives off a romantic feeling. The warm, but dark and subtle colors keep the image soft and mysterious still. Great job!

  8. Your set works very well together. You are incredibly consistent and do a wonderful job at framing. A great example of this is #12, where you have taken a shelf full of spray paint and made it into an interested focal point simply by taking the photo head on. My favorite photo is #6 because you captured a skateboarder in action. I know it's difficult to be a creep to captured action in lieu of objects. I wish your photos had more variety in settings and subjects.

  9. I really enjoyed your photos in this critique. I like how all of your photos seem to compliment one another. They all somehow relate to each other in some aspect or another. I like how your photos seem to reflect what you is personal to you and what you like to do and see. Try not posting multiple pictures of the same subject. Pick the best picture of the subject and just post that one. My favorite picture of yours is #12.

  10. Wow! Great set! I really like how you captured the theme of this topic: color. So may to choose from, so many different variations of color, it really is a great set. The angles on a lot of your photos is great: very different from what you expect. You transformed an every day walk around the city into a very unconventional way of viewing such everyday things. My favorite photo is #6. Mainly for the angle and the use of color in it however this photo seemed to embody the theme of passion for some reason. I really like the studio photos you've captured too, again great way to reflect passion into your work.

  11. David -

I love the use of color in your photographs. I really feel that you were able to capture the theme this week, and that you have a very interesting way of looking at things. These photos all seem to compliment each other and feel like a true collection. My favorite picture would have to be number 6 because of the interesting perspective it presents of the city and the skateboarder.

  12. David, you have a great eye for photography and composition. Overall, I think my favorite came down to #13. It is so unique. The colors are bursting with passion, along with the broken glass. There are so many layers to the photograph so I find myself seeing something I didn't see before each time I look back at the photo. My favorite part is the reflection in the glass. The blue sky and yellow leaves create beautiful contrast. Really good job David!
