I absolutely love your approach to closeup shots. They definitely mystify the viewer, and the contrast is terrific. Number one is my favorite since I spent the longest amount of time looking at it and going back to it...in fact, it reminds me of your work Steve...
Picture 6 got my attention, although I wish it was larger so I could get a better look. I have no idea what it is, so that certainly interesting in regards to the mystery aspect. The photo in black and white looks great and you can still see the grain in the material which is very cool. I liked the contrast created by the shadows etc. The photo has good depth , like I said just wish the image was larger! Well done.
You've got a great eye with all of these close up compositions. I love the detail you were able to capture. Excellent work, indeed.
Number 1 is definitely my favorite. It is extremely abstract and completely bewilders me. The way the subject matter completely fills the entire frame, is great. I find myself staring at this (as well as many of your others) wondering what in the heck it could be. With the contrast between lights and darks, it almost looks like an negative image.
Sarah- I love number 1 !! Black and white really gives whatever the photo is of, great contrast. The contrast is just so unique. It completely fills the requirement of mysterious! Great angle and approach of your shots! I know were all hoping you tell us what it is :)
Hi Sarah! I agree with a couple of the others who said #1. This photo just sticks out in your collection. The colors and movement are very pleasing to the eye, you were also very successful at creating a shot that is unique and thought provoking.
I want to know what it is but most of all how you did it! You have an interesting contrast of black and white and I am not quite sure how it works – It would be great to read the recipe for this photo! The materials and textures in this photo of yours make this softer than the rest. Just, mesmerizing.
When I first looked at this photograph I imagined a chicken just dart (kind of like road runner) and its feathers fly up and in that second you snapped a picture of them falling to the ground. Weird imagery but it had my imagination running which is great. Good technique, one of my favorites!
Very strong set you have here. Every photo is edited nicely and is mysterious to me. But my favorite is definitely number one. Out of all the photos I've viewed so far this one has the strongest sense of mystery, in my opinion. My first impression was some flowers, maybe the round items are rose petals. im just not sure! so good job!!
Can I just say, wow?! I am very impressed with the work that you submitted. Every one of the photographs, except for the self-portraits, I could not tell right away what it was I was looking at. I think this is exactly what the assignment was asking for and you totally nailed it. That being said, I do sadly have to choose a favorite one. I would have to say that my favorite of yours is photo #1. I am still not exactly sure what it is that I am looking at, but it is certainly making me think about it. Also, I just really like it.
I really enjoy how close you get to your subjects. Getting up so close really shows off the texture of the subject and I enjoy that. Overall, 5 is my favorite.
The subject looks very dusty and old, so the feeling I get from it is old. I am still not sure what the subject exactly is (great accomplishment since this crit was mystery!).
The compostion of the photo is great. I like how the whole frame is filled with the nubs, some spots darker than others is great for the eye to wonder.
I love the composition of your photographs and the close up shots. This closeness adds to the mystery of the photos and had me wondering what I was looking at. I loved picture 7 because it reminded me of he inside of an old piano that I used to play with as a kid. I also loved number 10.
Great work! I really like number 9. The pattern caught my attention as well as the angle at which it was taken. I think it's a city grate but I'm really not sure. The mystery in it really grabbed my interest too. The use of close ups in your photos is great. They seem like familiar things yet so close kind of adds mystery to them.
these are all pretty dope. i like number 8 the most. you stayed on track as far as mystery goes and there's a lot of good content you focused on this week. there are some outdoor photos but they're not blatant outdoor photos which i really enjoy. a lot of people are looking at nature and such but this hit the mark with me. cool.
Hi Sarah- You nailed the mystery aspect of this project. By getting extremely close up to your subject its almost impossible to be certain what the item or place you are actually taking a picture of. 9 7 Most of these photos give me a music kind of feel, especially number 9 and 7. I would have to say my favorite was number 7. I love the way you can see all the details on on what I think is maybe a trumpet? Good job on framing these close up, i look forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks everyone!! This was really encouraging and nice to read. I started this class off in panic mode and have really grown to love it. I am a pharmacy major and so this is very much outside my comfort level. To answer the most asked question, picture number one is actually the inside of an artichoke near the heart. I had never seen it before and was sort of fascinated by it.

ReplyDeleteThanks Ryan! The sad thing is when I make it larger ( I tried), it blurs and you lose the detail of the grain, which you and I both like!

I also enjoyed photos 7 & 8!
Thanks! You are right about old and dusty, it is actually an old part of a saxophone. The details drew me to it.

You are right about the music. I took a lot of these at his music school one day during his lessons. And yes number 7 is a trumpet, good eye.
