  1. Rachel, you have a beautiful set of photographs here! Numbers 1, 9 and 18 are ones that really stuck out to me, I can't really pick a singular favorite. The way light coming in through the window lines the profile of your face in #1 makes for a really strong composition. The lace curtain creates this soft glow, rather than a harsh light, but gives us just enough light to be able to see a bit of white in your eye, which adds detail to your face when the shadows are covering most.

The color reproduction in #9 reminds me of when I was a child and I loved nothing more than to be able to run outside in the Fall and play in the leaves. The warm tones of the leaves juxtaposed with the cloudy sky and desolate street reminds of the time of year when Fall is ending and winter approaches.

#18 reminds me of the locket necklaces, and your reflection is the picture inside. The sepia tone of the image adds to the vintage feeling of the subject itself.

    Good job all around!

  2. Hi Rachel, I really like all of your photos. I think you did a great job with using different perspectives and angles to mix it up. I really like 5,6,9 and 18. I have no idea how you did 18 but Lauralea was right, it looks like one of those lockets that has the pictures in them. This may be silly but number 6 reminds me of my childhood. My mom has always been a big soda drinker and I feel like I have seen that picture before. It was a common site as a child and you replicated it nicely. My POW would have to be 9. Although it seems like a straight on angle, the depth in the picture with the road draws me back into the shot. The coloring reminds me of being in the country during the fall. I really like it.

  3. Hi Rachel,
I’m always impressed by your photos! Overall you did a good job. Some of my top choices are, #1, #4, #17 and #18. The reason I like # 1 is because you look very pensive. While I don’t get the feeling of this photograph being a direct memory, I feel as though you are remembering something and thinking of it deeply. I think the use of black and white with lace are what says you are thinking of a memory rather than any other thought. #17 reminds me of elementary school and how all of my teachers had globes that we hardly ever used for anything important other than seeing how fast we could spin it and what place our finger would land on. I like how you spun it to add the blurry effect.
My favorite is definitely # 18. Now, my art teacher from high school would kill me for choosing it because it doesn’t have a “developed composition” but it just speaks to me. I remember arguing with him about certain things not having complex compositions after I saw a painting (that this photo reminds me of). It was a white canvas and positioned somewhat like this mirror here, was a painted man in a chair. I loved it because the white space continuously brought me toward the center and forced me to look at the only subject available. Don’t get me wrong composition is great but sometimes art like this just works! Its small and a little lost like a memory, like a fading memory.
    Good work!

  4. Rachel- you've got a very diverse set of photographs here! Nice work, great work. Instantly I noticed how special number 1 was, I am not sure what you are doing in this photograph but it is captured very much like one of Ross's photographs from this week. Numbers 8 and 9 stand out to me as well, professor should take all of these fall colors and create a photo because we all have incorporated it in our sets this semester. Number 11 is a throwback for me, and probably the rest of the class. Now that we all have iPods and technology is so advanced it really rare to have CDs like these and capturing them really brings out a memory for me. My POW is number 6 because I am not sure how, but you have used the light to get the perfect color that matches the beverage in the glass. I love this photograph. You've absolutely chosen the perfect angle, and the glass is in the perfect lighting. Number 17 is really great, definitely brings back memory's from grade school - I haven't seen a globe in a classroom in so long. If only we could all go back to grade school, things were so simple (or it seemed). I also enjoy your self portrait, 18, it reminds me of old paintings that people have hung on their wall. You've really grasped the vintage concept in this photograph specifically. Great work this week, lovely set of photographs. I very much enjoyed them.

  5. Rachel, the feeling that I get from a lot of your photos is a sort of softness, and I especially like that many of your photos are desaturated, which helps it give that feeling. As a side note, I’m also seeing a lot of central vanishing points in our class’ photos this crit, like in 9! I guess that it stands out to me because I like symmetry. Speaking of symmetry, I like the way that you framed #18. I pick that one for your POW. All of the white space is really interesting and I don’t think we’ve seen much of that here before. It makes it look like a vintage photograph hanging on the wall. Nice job!

  6. Photo # 4 is my favorite here. It has such a great vintage feel with the colors and their contrast with one another. I like the effects the sunlight has on the right and the shadows created on the upper left with the trees. Great shot. The water looks amazing and it really gives me a vintage feel. As Rachael mentions, your photos are quite soft, which I think is a great component for a memory shot. Good work!

  7. Photo #6 is my favorite. The framing & composition of this photograph with the bird's eye view worked really nicely. It looks very professional. I also like how the shadow from the blinds is cast over the glass. Really interesting

  9. Hi Rachel,

I love your style and your photos came out so pleasant and easy to look at. I like that. My POW for you this critique is photo #9. I love the symmetry of the shot, along with the colors of the leaves and the lighting of the day.

  10. Photo 4 has my vote for photo of the week. Reminds me of Kelly drive where id imagine it was taken, I spend a fairly good amount of time walking my dog there and running there. The bushes out of focus in front of the focused crew team adds for a cool effect. Overall this was a great set this critique.
